Finding duplicates of a trinket levels it up:

Once a trinket is level V, each extra copy adds a '''boost life''' (❤). While a trinket has boost lives it counts as level VI. Each death with the trinket equipped removes one boost life. The Golden Bobber also loses one when a legendary fish monster is caught, and the Experimental Attuner when it is used on a Resurrector. When the boost lives run out, the trinket goes back to level V until you find more copies.
